It is the first thing a buyer opens
Most people never look under the bonnet until they are selling, and by then it has had years of road dust, leaf litter and oil mist settling on it. A clean bay does not make the car go any better, but it tells whoever is looking that the car has been cared for, and that is worth more than the hour it takes.
It is also the cheapest thing on this site that changes how a car reads. £50 on its own, or add it to anything else while I am already there.

How it is actually done
Cover up
Alternator, fuse box, air intake, coil packs and any exposed connector get covered before a drop of anything goes near them. This is the part that gets skipped, and it is the part that costs money when it goes wrong.
Degrease and agitate
A citrus degreaser worked in with detailing brushes, by hand, into the seams and corners where the dirt actually lives. Baked-on oil mist needs dwell time and agitation, not pressure.
Careful rinse
A low-pressure rinse with deionised water, kept well away from anything electrical, so the dirt leaves with the water instead of being driven further in.
Dry and dress
Blown dry so nothing sits wet in the crevices, covers removed, then plastics and hoses dressed to a satin finish. The engine is run afterwards so we both know everything is as it was.
What a clean will not fix
A bay that has been leaking will look clean and then be oily again within a fortnight, because the leak is still there. Cleaning it does not fix it, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling you the same job twice.
Corroded alloy, perished rubber, faded cracked plastic and bare metal that has already gone orange do not come back with a clean either. They come back a bit, and you will hear which before I start rather than after.
On a very old or very neglected bay I would rather show you what is realistic first. Send a photo with the bonnet up and you will get an honest answer before anything is booked.

Is it safe to clean a modern engine bay?
Yes, done properly. The risk comes from pressure washing a bay, which forces water past seals and into connectors. Everything sensitive is covered first, the rinse is low pressure, and the bay is blown dry rather than left sitting wet. The engine is run before I leave.
Can I book just the engine bay on its own?
Yes. £50, about an hour, and it does not need a valet booked alongside it. Further out there is a minimum job value based on distance, so it may be worth pairing it with something else - the booking page works that out from your postcode before you pay.
My engine bay is oily. Will cleaning sort it?
It will look right on the day, but if there is a live leak it will be oily again shortly. A clean bay does make a leak easier to find, which is useful before a garage visit, but the clean is not the repair. Send a photo and you will get a straight answer.
