The web of fine scratches you see in sunlight sits in the clear coat, usually put there by sponges, brushes and automatic car washes. They scatter light, which is why a swirled car looks flat and grey even when it's spotless.
Correction levels the very top of that clear coat with a cutting compound so the light reflects cleanly again, and the swirls are gone rather than filled. A Stage 1 takes out up to 75% of the swirl marks permanently. A Stage 2 cuts deeper and refines after it, up to 85%.
There is only so much clear coat on a car, so this is not something to do every year. Done once, properly, and then protected, it lasts.

Safe wash and decon
Pre-wash, two-bucket contact wash, then full chemical decontamination - iron fallout and tar chemically dissolved out of the paint, never rubbed off.

A clay bar over every panel to lift what the chemicals leave behind, then the paint is read under inspection lighting and depth-checked before a machine touches it.
The cutting stage

We do not offer Stage 3, which is wet sanding. If a car needs that, we will tell you rather than sell you something that will not fix it.
It's slow work under inspection lighting: a lighter correction is around five hours, and a high level of correction on a two-door can run past twelve. Multi-stage correction is quoted per car after we've seen the paint in person or in good photos - because if the clear coat is thin or failing, more polishing is the wrong answer and we'll say so.
