Cape Hill kerbsides, brake dust and short Birmingham miles
Cape Hill is the busiest part of town and the streets running off it are mostly Victorian terraces with cars parked both sides. That means short, stop-start driving: down to the Windmill Shopping Centre, along the High Street, out towards the Dudley Road. Brakes work hard at those speeds and the dust goes straight onto the wheel faces, so alloys load up far quicker than they do on a car spending its life on the motorway.
West Smethwick is a different problem. The M5 runs along the western edge on columns, crossing both canals and the railway at Spon Lane, Junctions 1 and 2 are both close, the Stour Valley line cuts through the middle of the town and the Soho depot sits on the Birmingham boundary. Cars kept near the lines and the elevated road pick up ferrous fallout, which is tiny iron particles sitting in the lacquer. They feel gritty long after the car has been washed and a wash will not shift them.
On the Bearwood side, around Lightwoods Park and Warley Woods, and at Victoria Park off the High Street, it is trees rather than traffic. Leave a car under a lime through the summer and you get honeydew and bird lime baked into the paint, and both will etch if they sit long enough. Warley Woods is open ground with a golf course on it, so boot linings and rear carpets on that side of Bearwood take a lot of mud between October and March.
Since the Midland Metropolitan opened on Grove Lane in October 2024 there are a lot more cars in Smethwick doing shift hours and sitting in a car park all day. Between that, the private hire work that runs out of this part of Sandwell and how dense the housing is, the interior is usually the part of a car here that is worth spending the money on first.
Bearwood Road carries the Outer Circle buses and is nose to tail for most of the day, and the side roads off it are tight. Kerbed alloy faces and scuffed door edges are normal here rather than unusual. We do not refurbish kerbed wheels - that is a refinishing job. What we can do is ceramic coat the wheel faces, £120 for a set of four, which keeps brake dust from bonding on and makes them far easier to clean. Tar picked up on the A456 and the M5 comes off at the decontamination stage, not with a wash.
Neighbourhoods and practicalities
We cover the whole of Smethwick: Cape Hill, the High Street and Victoria Park end, the Uplands, Londonderry, West Smethwick and Galton Village, Soho and Black Patch, the Albion estate, and the Bearwood side down to Thimblemill Road, Lightwoods Hill and the Warley Woods edge. Rood End, over the Oldbury boundary in B68, is no trouble either. It is about 11 miles from us in Wolverhampton by road, roughly half an hour down the A4123 and across.
The honest bit is the parking. On the terraced streets off Cape Hill and around Rolfe Street there are cars both sides and no driveways, and a full valet needs enough room to get round the car with the doors open. If you can hold a space at the kerb, we can work there. If your street is permit-only or you are in a flat off Windmill Lane, say so when you book and we will work it out - a quieter spot nearby, a relative's drive, or you can bring the car to us by arrangement.
We bring our own water, so a tap is not needed. What we do need is a standard outside socket, or a ground floor window or door we can run a lead through. A lead hanging out of a first floor window is not safe and we will not ask you to try it. The 1930s semis around Warley and the Bearwood side, and the newer houses in Galton Village, usually have a drive and a socket already. The Uplands is mostly terraces from around 1900, so that end is street parking.
